Craig General Hospital is located on a piece of the homestead of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Friend, who donated the land in the early 1960s. Funds for construction came from a federal Hill-Burton grant of $245,000 and a Craig County bond issue of $250,000. At its opening in 1963, Craig General Hospital operated with 32 beds and 70 employees, contributing a $149,647 annual payroll to the community. Today, the facility is licensed for 62 beds and employs more than 330 people with a $5 million payroll.

Vinita was established in 1871. In 1889, gunman and lawman Tom Threepersons was born there. It was the first city in the state with electricity. The city was first named Downingville, and was a primarily Native American community. It was later renamed Vinita after Vinnie Ream. The city was incorporated in 1898.
